OZ UPDATE - So Oz's EKG, Blood work, and Kidneys look GREAT!!! His RBC's were at 44! This made him a candidate for adriamycin/doxorubicin that we will be doing every three weeks for up to 5 treatments, depending on how he handles it... i will not keep him on it if he has side effects affecting his quality of life.. I am stopping the metronomic therapy for now to make sure he handles the adriamycin well.. I don't want to overdo anything and overwhelm his system.. Also all his antioxidents will be held off one week prior and after his treatment. So for the one week in between he will get all of those supplements.. I have been researching like crazy and preparing myself for this appt.. I also read several studies that show antioxidents can interfere with the efficiency of adriamycin/doxorubicin and the oncologist agreed.. My husband said i sounded like an expert ;) Oz will still get a heaping amounts of greens, fish, poultry, and meat (minus beef)... probiotics and unlimited amounts of bone broth.. Oz looks really good and this will hopefully extend his life far past the 3 months they gave him... Much love and forever thankful Oz and U

PS While Oz was in back getting his tests and treatment.. my husband and I went to grab a coffee and low and behold a black lab on the loose and a lady trying to catch him! Oh boy.... so i of course had my husband make a U turn and out I was to "save the day" ;)... This lab was not this woman's dog she was also trying help him.. It took me a 1/2 hour and about a mile of running in high heels i might add to get that lil sh*& ;) but i got him!! and when i did, he gave me a bunch of kisses ahahah... Thankfully "boomer" wearing a collar and tags! We called several numbers on the tags and reached his Grandma she quickly came to pick him up (his dad was out of town).. She was very thankful and also very lucky to have "Boomer" safe and sound.... It made my day to know i was able to help save a life :))

Oz the Rottweiler Post Surgery - Hemgiosarcoma Cancer

Oz was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma of the spleen and had it removed in emergency surgery in Jan 29, 2012. Oz has started treatment and we pray that he goes into remission letting him live out a long and happy life. Keep him in your prayers.

OZ UPDATE 2/1/12- Oz spent his first night back home after surgery :) We slept on the floor with him and he did really well. It fells like heaven to have him back and snoring next to us... Any cancer recipes, supplements post surgery would be great!!
I am a researchaholic and will be a expert again in no time. But any jump start or leads can only help! A ton of big wet kisses from Oz and a huge hug to all from all of us!

I just spoke with Oz's vet... He just finished his blood transfusion , his red blood count is holding and no heart arrhythmias post surgery. They have sent in his spleen w/ tumor and a sample of his liver to be biopsied ... We can visit him this afternoon and i can hardly wait to squeeze and kiss our boy!!!! there is no way i can explain how hard this is, Oz is not a dog or a pet. OZ IS FAMILY... i have been thru it before with my last rottie girl Ulla, she had Osteosarcoma. At this point losing my home and everything else is peanuts to health of your family.... I thank you all for your prayers and please pray that Oz's biopsy comes back benign... He has a chance and i will do everything i can to give him every fighting chance. He is a strong and healthy boy!

Oz is in ER! :'((((( he underwent major surgery late this evening 10pm after they found a ruptured tumor on his spleen!!!! Hemangiosarcoma a very aggressive cancer...... i cannot believe this is happening.... why?!?!?!!!!!! I am very lucky that he is still alive tonight! i am dreaming that this is all just a nightmare.....This honestly cannot be happening! i can't imagine life without my boy.... we are losing everything right now but the one thing that matters is my Oz...... i LOVE you Oskar (Oz) boy!!! — at Southern California Veterinary Specialty Hospital.

Barely alive - emaciated Rottweiler found on highway

Hamilton, IL - Her body should be full, muscular and commanding - instead she has black fur draped over protruding bones.

Her face should be alert and confident - instead it is caked in dirt and dried mucus - her demeanor one of defeat.

She should be proud and regal, but her body is wasted and she is weary.

This Rottweiler was found wandering along a highway in Illinois - she is so emaciated and weak that she can walk no further than a few steps before having to lie down.

She is a dog who is broken.

Hoping to put her back together is the West Hancock Canine Rescue.

The rescue organization has taken this defeated dog to the Hancock Veterinary Clinic where she is being treated for her many ailments - the most glaring of which is her current state of starvation.

Those caring for her are hopeful that she will survive, but her condition is guarded - she is extremely weak and malnourished.

Please keep this broken soul in your thoughts and prayers as she struggles to overcome her maladies.

Adopt Zac who was rescued from a both psychologically and physically abused home!

Zac is one of our most special pets. Zac has had a long, hard road to travel just in order to survive. Zac came to us in the beginning as a deaf Rottweiler who knew no commands or manners. We taught Zac commands such as "sit", "down", "come", "good boy", and "outside" in American Sign Language. Zac is so eager to please that he was thrilled to learn these commands and obeys them easily (better than most hearing dogs obey vocal commands actually!) Rottweilers are extremely loyal and intelligent companions who, unfortunately, attract the wrong type of crowd. Some people will go to any lengths to have this breed, as one can see by Zac's story.
Zac was adopted to a family who we intended to be his forever home. They were educated in his ASL commands, they were informed of his anxiety issues. They willingly lied to us when they told us they would continue his training, give him his medication and a good home.

These people abused Zac, both psychologically and physically. Zac requires a medication, to be given to him daily for his separation anxiety. We supplied a two month supply of this medication to them when they adopted Zac. They simply REFUSED to give Zac his medication, thinking it was no big deal. When Zac gets anxious, he urinates and defecates (some dogs become destructive; i.e. chewing, digging, etc to express their separation anxiety. Zac's separation anxiety demonstrates itself by him defecating and urinating in the house. Something he never does when on his medication, because he is house trained. ) They beat Zac and banished him to the back yard. They ABUSED him for doing something they KNEW HE WOULD DO if he didn't receive his medication, yet they REFUSED to give him the medication we supplied.

We found out how severe Zac's abuse was when we confiscated him. Zac was adopted to them weighing 100 lbs and two months later when we confiscated him, he weighed only 69 lbs. As soon as he walked through the door, he collapsed on the floor in pain and exhaustion. We rushed him to the veterinarian and nearly lost him. The vet told us that they had been starving him and beating him regularly, and X-rays showed that Zac had suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck from being kicked. It was pinched a nerve in his neck causing him excruciating pain. Our hearts were broken for our poor boy who we thought we had placed with a responsible family. We have vowed to do right by Zac and make sure he never again had to experience suffering.

Zac has been in a long-term foster home since this ordeal. Even though Zac has been through terrible and unfair trials in his lifetime, he has never stopped loving people or being friendly. Zac loves both men and women but gravitates towards men the most, even though the majority of his abuse was from a man. He gets most joy out of his toys (he loves tennis balls and Kong toys.... look at the pics!) and he will play fetch all day if he has someone to throw the ball for him. Zac is a true companion who loves human interaction. Despite the suffering Zac has endured, he remains TRUSTING of humans-a trait that we as people cannot usually even lay claim to.

Zac continues to be rehabilitated within his foster home. He knows all common commands in ASL, which are extremely easy for a potential adopter to learn. The medication Zac requires is a VERY inexpensive medication that can be found on the four dollar list at Wal Mart. Zac requires proper exercise not just because he is a large dog but also because this helps reduce anxiety.

One would never be able to tell that Zac had anxiety when he is properly exercised. Zac has such a personality and is just one huge teddy bear who is looking for his forever home.

Ibuprofen is fatal for canines

Ibuprofen for dogs. ITS TOXIC!!

I decided to post some very imoortant information on ibuprofen since today i learned of a friend giving her dog Ibuprofen... when i found out i immediately contacted her.. so i thought i better pass this on since she is a wonderful dog owner and thought she was doing what was right...

Today's Salt Lake Tribune reports that a man has been arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals after allegedly feeding a dog chicken laced with 1200 mg of ibuprofen. That dose could cause acute renal failure in a small dog.
Many people administer Ibuprofen for pain relief thinking it's safe. Unfortunately it's not; small doses given over a short period of time have proved fatal.

Based on the number of dogs treated, The ASPCA Poison Control Center rates Ibuprofen the number one reason for dog poisoning.

The poisoning arises from either the dog having consumed a large number of tablets after chewing through a packet or bottle of Ibuprofen or the dog being intentionally given the drug by a well meaning owner as a pain killer.
From the ASPCA database:

*25-125mg per kg of body weight - symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, stomach ulcers;

*more than 175mg per kg of body weight - the above symptoms plus blood in the stools, acute kidney failure;

*more than 400mg per kg of body weight - the above symptoms plus seizures, coma, disorientation; more than 600mg per kg of body weight - death.

*The ASPCA has reported a case where 3mg per kg of body weight given every other day for six weeks proved fatal.
Ibuprofen sold over the counter contains anywhere from 50mg to 200mg per tablet; each prescription tablet may contain 800mg of Ibuprofen. Given a dog's propensity to eat everything in front of their noses, a packet of Ibuprofen tablets left within their reach can do a lot of damage.

*Symptoms can take anywhere from 12 hours to several days to show. However, if you suspect your dog has ingested Ibuprofen take him to the vet immediately. Any tablets consumed must be flushed out of your dog's system as quickly as possible to improve his chances of a full recovery.

Hi, I’m Sophie. I’m a Rottweiler mix, around 6 years old. I’m kind of the grandma at Bark Avenue. I’ve been here a long time. I’ve seen lots of dogs and cats come in and I’ve watched them all go home with families. I keep hoping someone will take me home someday, too. My life hasn’t been all that great really. My last family just opened the gates when they decided they didn’t want me anymore. I wandered around for a while and that wasn’t easy. You see, my leg was broken when I was little and no one took me to see a doctor. It healed but the leg is permanently turned outward. The doctors say I’m ok but I will always have a limp. I’m really lucky that Bark Avenue Foundation found me and I’ve learned that not all people are bad. I get lots of love and affection here but I really want to have a family of my own. Awesome news!! I spoke with Baldwin Park Animal Care and Control and Lazarus was adopted by a rescue!! YAY YAY!!! I hung up the phone and had tears of happiness... Sweet Lazarus was saved from be euthanized tomorrow 10/4/09 and hopefully soon will be in his forever home... From being dumped on the streets to be saved by a wonderful rescue! THANK YOU!!!!!!! Sweet Lazarus I am so happy!

A sad warning for dog owners - Heatstroke

A warning to everyone with a dog - NEVER EVER leave your dog in a car in warm weather , ever!! Sadly on May 28, 2009 a Rottweiler named "Buddy" was forgotten about in the back of his owners van and passed away as a result..... (see article below).

Please know your car can become a death trap in just a matter of minutes even on a MILD day with your windows open!! Once a dogs temperature reaches just 106 degrees (101 is a dogs normal temperature) their vital organs are already in serious trouble and your dog will have a heatstroke. And heatstrokes are DEADLY!

On a hot day your car will climb as fast as 30 degrees per minute and would only be a matter of a COUPLE MINUTES and your dog would be dead. For example on a 80 degree day your car can reach 120 degrees in just 10 minutes! and don't think that a 70 degree day is not hot -- your car will reach the deadly limit within 10 minutes!!

According to Dr. William Fortune, a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University, "Dogs become less efficient at cooling themselves as the humidity rises. Just like people, dogs are cooled by evaporation. The problem with high humidity is that it decreases evaporation and slows down the cooling process. This time of year we hear a lot about the heat index, which is a measurement of both the temperature and the humidity level, and that is what an owner needs to pay close attention to. There are other factors that hinder canines' ability to cool themselves. They only have sweat glands on the pads of their feet and on their nose, which are inadequate for cooling during hot and humid days. Panting helps dogs cool themselves but they still aren't as efficient at cooling themselves as people are."

If your dog has a heatstroke cool your dog down immediately and get him to a vet!

Cool him down with cool (NOT COLD) water, take him into an air conditioned area, sponge their groin area, tummy area, wet his tongue, place rolled up wet towels against his head, neck, tummy, and between his legs. When his temperature drops to 104 F or 103 F, stop cooling efforts. Cooling too fast or too much can cause other problems.

Is Rawhide okay for my dog?

I have received many emails from many of you asking if it is okay to give your Rottweilers/dogs rawhide. My answer, NO. Do not ever give your Rottweiler/dog rawhide,sterilized bones, or smoked bones. These all can cause intestinal blockages or the sharp edges can tear thru your dog's intestinal wall or stomach lining. This requires immediate surgery IF you catch it soon enough and many times it results in death. Unfortunately I seen this happen to a very close friends dog... RIP BUGSY.

PETA thinks the answer is banning Pit Bulls. Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA, has stated "these days Pit Bulls are kept for protection by almost every drug dealer and pimp in every major city". So wait, criminals are going to determine the survival of this breed? Wow, that's smart... what about people like me, or you, the majority of wonderful pit bulls and people who love these animals. Clearly this isn't the answer, it doesn't even make sense. Think about it, if Pit Bulls were outlawed, do you really believe criminals would have a hard time getting one or get rid of them? If you say yes you're living in a bubble. And what's to stop the next breed from being banned? Where does the buck stop? Ridiculous. Abuse of power if you asked me.

The bottom line is, the law doesn't mean anything to criminals. It never has, that's why they exist.

Here is a breif run down on CPR for your dog or cat. Please keep in mind that the following basic instruction is not intended to take the place of a visit to your veterinary clinic or pet emergency hospital, which should ALWAYS BE YOUR FIRST PLAN IN AN EMERGENCY. However, if treatment can be started on the scene or on the way to the emergency veterinarian, a your dogs life may be saved!

Any animal, no matter how docile and sweet, can become fiercely protective of himself when in pain so be very careful when approaching an injured animal. *Do not attempt CPR unless the animal is unconscious, both for safety and for the health of the animal*

CPR should never be performed on a conscience, combative animal.

Airway: First: Call your pet's name to see if there is any response. If no response, carefully lean down close and look, feel and listen.

Look at the chest to see if there is a rise and fall, feel on your cheek or the back of your hand for breath coming from the nose or mouth, listen for breath sounds.

Breathing: If the animal is not breathing, pull the tongue out just a little, close the mouth and tilt their head back slightly to open the airway. Administer 4-5 breaths mouth to snout. That is, close their mouth and breathe into their snout through your mouth. If squeamish about this, cover the nose with a light tissue, gauze or other flimsy material. You want to breath out just enough to make the chest rise. Larger dogs will need more breath, little dogs and felines will need much less. Don't give too much or you will injure the lungs.

Circulation: Check to see if their heart is beating. Check for a heartbeat (pulse). The pulse points on a dog is on the inside of the rear leg, towards the top of the leg. This is the femoral pulse. For cats, the pulse point is on the outside of the left front leg, just behind the shoulder, this is the apical pulse.

If there is a pulse but no breathing, continue to perform mouth to snout resuscitation at the rate of 1 breath every 3 seconds. For small dogs or cats give 1 breath every two seconds. If there is no pulse, begin CPR.

For a dog, place the dog on the ground or other hard surface with his right side down. Bend the left front leg at the elbow, pushing the shoulder back. The point on the rib cage where the elbow touches the body is where you place your hands for compression. Place one hand over the other and clasp fingers together. Lock your elbows and perform compressions approximately 2-3 inches deep. Do compressions first, then a breath at the following rates:

Giant Dogs: 1 breath for every ten compressions, check for pulse

Small, medium and large dogs: 1 breath for every five compressions, check for pulse

For cats or toy breed dogs, the technique is a little different. Place the animal flat on the ground but place your hands on either side of the chest directly behind the shoulder blades. Your palms should be over the heart, sandwiching the animals' chest between both hands. Begin compressions at only ½-1 inch deep and give one breath for every three compressions, check for pulse.

If you can get certified in pet cpr and first aid - it could be what saves your dog someday.

Breed Specific Bans

Coming to a town near you! If its not already there.... This needs to stop!

A group of laws that bans particular breeds, usually pit bulls (a type of dog, not a breed) and sometimes Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Akitas, Dobermans, Chow Chows, and a few others. These laws are usually passed after several attacks by a particular breed so that city councils can assure citizens they are “doing something” about a voter concern.

But breed bans don't work. They target all dogs of a breed -- the innocent as well as the guilty; are difficult to enforce; and do not end the use of guardian dogs by criminals. If pit bulls in their various incarnations are banned, drug dealers and other felons switch to another breed or mix. In the meantime, the ill-tempered terrier mix that bites the hand that feeds it and the poorly-bred purebred that attacks the neighborhood children pose a far greater danger to people than the obedience-trained American Staffordshire Terrier that is a registered therapy dog but cannot step foot inside the city.

Far better than breed-specific bans are strict laws to control aggressive dogs of any breed or mix. Known as generic vicious dog laws, they put restrictions on the ownership of dogs that pose a danger to people, restrictions such as confinement in locked, escape-proof kennels while outdoors on the owner's property; muzzles when the dog is off the property; and purchase of a liability insurance policy.

They are going to be A LOT of work. They will challenge you, love you, frustrate you, but remember they are puppies and they need YOU TO TEACH THEM, TRAIN THEM, LEAD THEM, LOVE THEM, FEED THEM, SOCIALIZE THEM, POTTY TRAIN THEM, WALK THEM, PLAY WITH THEM, AND THE LIST GOES ON & ON & ON.... Its up to you to have if you want them to be an ambassador of the breed, a therapy dog, a canine good citizen.

They are all wonderful dogs and they will be your BEST FRIEND IN THE WORLD! It is up to you to show them the ropes. They will be a reflection of you.

21. When they are eating add something yummy to their bowl (a treat or a little peice of chicken) or you can add the other half of their food bit by bit so your hand in their bowl is NEVER A THREAT but invited because you are adding something good :)

REMEMBER PARVO IS VERY DEADLY. THE VACCINATION SCHEDULE IS USUALLY 6 WEEKS, 9 WEEKS, 16 WEEKS.

YOU SHOULD CONTINUE TO TAKE HIM TO TRAINING CLASSES AS AN TEENAGER AND ADULT. THE LAST THING YOU WANT IS A 80-130 POUND ROTTWEILER THAT IS IN CHARGE OF YOU AND IS NOT TRAINED, NOT GOOD! SO DO THEM AND YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DO THE RIGHT THING.

A Happy Rottweiler (but no food before or after Exercise)

A BIT ON BLOAT

Oz at the park yesterday. As we all know or should know a happy dog is an active dog. Especially a working breed like the Rottweiler. They need to get outside for a walk, jog, or swim, everyday! When you talk them on their daily excursions it is a great time to work on your training too! Oz and I continuously do trainging. HE LOVES IT!

EXERCISE AND BLOAT

Do NOT allow vigorous exercise at least one hour before or 3 hours after your dogs has eatten. However, exercise is only one contributer to Bloat in dogs. Dogs that eat fast and drink large amounts of water after eatting. Deep chested dogs with smaller waists have the highest incidence like Great Danes but also St Bernards, Rottweilers, Weimaraners, Irish Setters, German Shepards, Doberman Pinchers, Wolfhounds, Bloodhounds, etc... But Bloat can affect dogs of all sizes.

This is a very serious and life threatening situation. This condition involves swelling of the stomach from gas, fluid, or both.

If you think your dog has bloat it is a Veterinary EMERGENCY!

SEEK VETERINARY HELP IMMEDIATELY as Bloat can often lead to death!

Symptoms to look for in your dog - they can be subtle (there is no HOME REMEDY)

* Panting

* Excessive drooling

* Whining

* Cannot get comfortable

* Pacing

* Agitated

* Stomach is swollen

* Can't get comfortable, pacing

* The act of vomiting but produces no vomit (except maybe frothy foam, but small amounts)

HOW CAN I HELP PREVENT BLOAT? This however does not guarantee prevention from bloat but can help to decrease the risk of your dog getting bloat.

* Dry foods that expand in the stomach and this is a major contributor to bloat.

So if you feed a dry dog food go to a reputable dog food store with a knowledgeable staff that can help you find a dry food that DOES NOT EXPAND WHEN MIXED WITH WATER.

* Feed your dog a breakfast and dinner. Even better feed them 3 times a day. Do not feed one large meal a day.

* Do NOT allow your dog to drink large amounts of water after eating his meal.

* Do NOT allow vigorous exercise for at least one hour before or 3 hours
after the dog has eaten.

* If you have a dog that is at risk of Bloat be sure you know of a REPUTABLE Emergency vet along with their number and address posted in a place you will not forget along with your Veterinarian.

Interested in buying a Rottweiler?

You must be or you wouldn't be reading this. You've already heard how wonderful Rottweilers are. Well, I think you should also hear, before it's too late that ROTTWEILERS ARE NOT THE PERFECT BREED FOR EVERYONE.

As a breed they have a few features that some people find charming, but that some people find mildly unpleasant and some people find downright intolerable.

There are different breeds for different needs. There are over 200 purebred breeds of dogs in the world. Each breed was created with some specific purposes in mind. There are lap dogs, hound dogs, herding dogs, hunting dogs, and many varied combinations of these and other functions. Before you decide on one specific breed, investigate it's history, temperament, and uses to make sure that they mesh well with your own lifestyle. Just because a breed is currently popular does not mean it's the right one for you, and the choice of a dog should be made with the intention of caring for that dog throughout it's lifetime.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO THE BREED *CHIEFLY* BECAUSE OF IT'S REPUTATION AS A PROTECTIVE DOG.

While a Rottweiler is a large, impressive breed, true protection is only obtained through a lifetime of training. A Rottweiler requires many hours of obedience training and socialization, and can be expected at some point in his/her life to challenge it's owner. Some Rottweilers are also slow to bark, coming into their voice at two to three years of age - do not expect your Rottweiler puppy to instinctively warn you of an approaching stranger. There are many other breeds whose "watch dog" capabilities far exceed that of the Rottweiler. If all you are seeking is a dog that will bark at strangers approaching your home, you may want to look at the Labrador, the Standard Poodle, or some terrier breeds.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU ARE UNWILLING TO SHARE YOUR HOUSE AND YOUR LIFE WITH YOUR DOG.

Rottweilers were bred to share in many aspects of a family's daily life, as protective guardians, willing workers, and happy playmates. They thrive on companionship and they want to be wherever you are.

They are HAPPIEST LIVING WITH YOU IN YOUR HOUSE and going WITH YOU when you go out.

They need human contact and socialization in order to remain well-rounded. A Rottweiler who does not receive adequate socialization and attention is likely to grow up to be unsociable (fearful and/or unprovoked aggressive), unruly, and unhappy. He may well develop pastimes, such as digging or barking, that will displease you and/or your neighbors. An adult so exiled will be miserable too. If you don't strongly prefer to have your dog's companionship as much as possible, enjoy having him sleep in your bedroom at night and sharing many of your activities by day, you should choose a breed less oriented to human companionship. Likewise, if your job or other obligations prevent you from spending much time with your dog. No dog is really happy without companionship but the pack hounds are more tolerant of being kenneled or yarded so long as it is in groups of 2 or more. A better choice would be a cat, as they are solitary by nature.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU DON'T INTEND TO EDUCATE (TRAIN) YOUR DOG.

Basic obedience and household rules training is NOT optional for the Rottweiler. As an absolute minimum, you must teach him to reliably respond to commands to come, to lie down, to stay, and to walk at your side, on or off leash and regardless of temptations. You must also teach him to respect your household rules: e.g. is he allowed to get on the furniture? is he allowed to beg at the table? What you allow or forbid is unimportant; but it
is *critical* that you, not the dog, make these choices and that you enforce your rules consistently. You must commit yourself to attending an 8 to 10 week series of weekly lessons at a local obedience club or professional trainer and to doing one or two short (5 to 20 minutes) homework sessions per day. As commands are learned, they must be integrated into your daily life by being used whenever appropriate and enforced consistently. Young
Rottweiler puppies are relatively easy to train: they are eager to please, intelligent, and calm-natured, with a relatively good attention span. Once a Rottweiler has learned something, he tends to retain it well. Your cute, sweet little Rottweiler puppy will grow up to be a large, powerful dog with a highly self-assertive personality, and the determination to finish whatever he starts. If he has grown up respecting you and your rules, then all his physical and mental strength will work for you. But if he has grown up without rules and guidance from you, surely he will make his own rules and his physical and mental powers will often act in opposition to your needs and desires. For example: he may tow you down the street as if competing in a sled-dog race; he may grab food off the table; he may forbid your guests entry to his home. This training cannot be delegated to someone else, e.g. by sending the dog away to "boarding school", because the relationship of respect and obedience is personal between the dog and the individual who does the training. This is true of all dogs to a greater or lesser degree, but definitely to a very great degree in Rottweilers. While you definitely may want the help of an experienced trainer to teach you how to train your dog, you yourself must actually train your Rottweiler. As each lesson is well learned, then the rest of the household (except very young children) must also work with the dog, insisting he obey them as well.

Many of the Rottweilers that are rescued from Pounds and Shelters show clearly that they have received little or no basic training, neither in obedience nor in household deportment; yet these same dogs respond well to such training by the rescuer or the adopter.

It seems likely that a FAILURE TO TRAIN the dog is a significant cause of ROTTWEILER ABANDONMENT.

If you don't intend to educate your dog, preferably during puppyhood, you would be better off with a breed that is both small and socially submissive, e.g. a Shetland Sheepdog. Such a dog does require training, but a little bit goes further than with a Rottie. In the opposite direction, if your goals in obedience training are oriented towards success at high level competition (HIT, OTCH, and Gaines), please realize that while some Rottweilers can and do accomplish these goals, they are few and far between. The Rottie is not among the half dozen breeds best suited to such highly polished performance.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU LACK LEADERSHIP (SELF-ASSERTIVE) PERSONALITY.

Dogs do not believe in social equality. They live in a social hierarchy led by a pack-leader (Alpha). The alpha dog is generally benevolent, affectionate, and non-bullying towards his subordinates; but there is never any doubt in his mind or in theirs that the alpha is the boss and makes the rules. Whatever the breed, if you do not assume the leadership, the dog will do so sooner or later and with more or less unpleasant consequences for the abdicating owner. Like the untrained dog, the pack-leader dog makes his own rules and enforces them against other members of the household by means of a dominant physical posture and a hard-eyed stare, followed by a snarl, then a knockdown blow or a bite. Breeds differ in tendencies towards social dominance; and individuals within a breed differ considerably.

Rottweilers as a breed tend to be of a socially dominant personality

You cannot afford to let a Rottweiler become your boss. You do not have to have personality or mannerisms of a Marine boot camp Sergeant, but you do have to have the calm, quiet self-assurance and self-assertion of the successful parent ("Because I'm your mother, that's why.") or successful grade-school teacher. If you think you might have difficulty asserting yourself calmly and confidently to exercise leadership, then choose a breed known for its socially subordinate disposition, such as a Golden Retriever or a Shetland Sheepdog, and be sure to ask the breeder to select one of the more submissive pups in the litter for you.

Leadership and training are inextricably intertwined: leadership personality enables you to train your dog, and being trained by you reinforces your dog's perception of you as the alpha.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU DON'T VALUE CONSTANT COMPANIONSHIP AND SOMETIMES PHYSICAL AFFECTION.

A Rottweiler becomes deeply attached and devoted to his own family, and will show this affection in a variety of ways. Some Rottweilers are noticeably reserved, however most are more outgoing, and a few may be exuberantly demonstrative of their affections. They like to be near you, usually in the same room, an almost always with a head or paw in your lap. They will follow you from room to room, and if you are standing still, will lean against your leg. They have been known to upend morning coffee cups by deciding that it's time your hand touched their heads. They are emotionally sensitive to their favorite people: when you are joyful, proud, angry, or grief-stricken, your Rottie will immediately perceive it and may respond to your mood. As puppies, of course, they will be more dependent, clownish, and given to testing the limits of their surrounding.

A number of breeds retain into adulthood a less puppyish and playful disposition, e.g. Sheepdogs, Mastiffs and others. Quite a few are far more dramatically demonstrative and/or more clingingly dependent, e.g. the Golden Retriever.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU DISLIKE DAILY PHYSICAL EXERCISE.

Rottweilers need exercise to maintain the health of heart and lungs, and to maintain muscle tone. Because of his mellow, laid-back, often lazy, disposition, your Rottweiler will not give himself enough exercise unless you accompany him or play with him. An adult Rottweiler should have a morning outing of a mile or more, as you walk briskly, jog, or bicycle beside him, and a similar evening outing. For puppies, shorter and slower walks, several times a day are preferred for exercise and housebreaking.

All dogs need daily exercise of greater or lesser length and vigor. If providing this exercise is beyond you, physically or temperamentally, then choose one of the many small and energetic breeds that can exercise itself within your fenced yard. Most of the Toys and Terriers fit this description, but don't be surprised if a Terrier is inclined to dig in the earth since digging out critters is the job that they were bred to do.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU BELIEVE THAT DOGS SHOULD RUN "FREE".

Whether you live in town or country, no dog can safely be left to run "free" outside your fenced property and without your direct supervision and control. The price of such "freedom" is inevitably injury or death: from dogfights, from automobiles, from the pound or from justifiably irate neighbors. Even though Rotts are home-loving and less inclined to roam than most breeds, an unfenced Rott is destined for disaster. Like other breeds developed for livestock herding, most Rotts have inherited a substantial amount of "herding instinct", which is a strengthened and slightly modified instinct to chase and capture suitable large prey. The unfenced country-living Rott will sooner or later discover the neighbor's livestock (sheep, cattle, horses, poultry) and respond to his genetic urge to chase and harass such stock. State law almost always gives the livestock owner the legal right to kill any dog chasing or "worrying" his stock, and almost all livestock owners are quick to act on this! The unfenced city Rott is likely to exercise his inherited herding instinct on joggers, bicyclists, and automobiles. A thoroughly obedience-trained Rottweiler can enjoy the limited and supervised freedom of off-leash walks with you in appropriately chosen environments.

If you don't want the responsibility of confining and supervising your pet, then no breed of dog is suitable for you. A neutered cat will survive such irresponsibly given "freedom" somewhat longer than a dog, but will eventually come to grief.

READ THIS PARAGRAPH TWICE!

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO BUY, FEED, AND PROVIDE HEALTHCARE FOR ONE.

Rottweilers are NOT a cheap breed to buy or maintain, as running a careful breeding program with due regard for temperament, trainability, and physical soundness (hips especially) cannot be done cheaply. The time the breeder should put into each puppy's "pre-school" and socialization is also costly. The "bargain" puppy from a "back-yard breeder" who unselectively mates any two Rotts who happen to be of opposite sex may well prove to be extremely costly in terms of bad temperament, bad health, and lack of essential socialization. In contrast, the occasional adult or older pup is available at modest price from a disenchanted owner or from a breeder, shelter, or rescuer to whom the dog was abandoned; most of these Rottweilers, after evaluation by an experienced handler and vet check, are capable of becoming a marvelous dog for you if you can provide training, leadership, and understanding. Whatever the initial cost of your Rottweiler, the upkeep will not be cheap. Being large dogs, Rotts eat relatively large meals. (Need I add that what goes in one end must eventually come out the other?) Large dogs tend to have larger veterinary bills, as the amount of anesthesia and of most medications is proportional to body weight. Spaying or neutering, which costs more for larger dogs, is an essential expense for all pet Rottweilers, as it "takes the worry out of being close", prevents serious health problems in later life, and makes the dog a more pleasant companion.

Rottweilers are subject to quite a few genetically derived health disorders, however, two conditions in particular are extremely prevalent and can be costly to treat: hip dysplasia and parvovirus. *Also extremely prevalent Osteosarcoma/Bone cancer. Your best insurance against dysplasia is to buy only from a litter bred from OFA or foreign hip certified parents and [if possible], grandparents. Yes, this generally means paying more. While suceptibility to parvovirus may have a genetic predisposition, there are no predictive tests allowing selective breeding against it. Your best prevention is to follow the vaccination schedule recommended by your breeder in concordance with their veterinarian. As far as other genetically dreived health disorders, such as entropian, elbow dysplsia, cataracts, von Willebrand's disease (a bleeding disorder), and heart disorders, ALWAYS buy from a breeder who gives you a written contract guaranteeing against these disorders. Finally, the modest fee for participation in a series of basic obedience training classes is an essential investment in harmonious living with your dog; such fees are the same for all breeds, though conceivably you will need to travel a bit further from home to find a training class teacher who is competent with the more formidable breeds, such as Rottweiler. The modest annual outlays for immunizations and for local licensing are generally the same for all breeds, though some counties have a lower license fee for spayed/neutered dogs.

All dogs, of whatever breed and however cheaply acquired, require significant upkeep costs, and all are subject to highly expensive veterinary emergencies. Likewise all cats.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU WANT THE "LATEST, GREATEST FEROCIOUS KILLER ATTACK DOG".

Although the Rottweiler's capability as a personal protection dog and as a police dog have been justifiably well publicized, and occasionally dramatically over-stated, the Rottweiler is not any more capable in these respects than are half a dozen other protection breeds. Nor are all Rottweilers equally capable: some are highly so and some moderately so, but many have insufficient natural capacity for such work. Due to his laid-back disposition, the Rottweiler is, if anything, a bit slower to respond aggressively to a threat than are most other protection breeds. For the same reason, however, the Rottie is perhaps somewhat more amenable to control by the handler and somewhat more willing to follow commands to refrain from biting or to stop biting when told to do so. Whatever the breed, before the dog can be safely protection trained, he must have great respect for the leadership of his handler and must be solidly trained in basic obedience to that handler. Equally essential, he must have a rock-solidly stable temperament and he must also have been "socialized" out in the world enough to know that most people are friendly and harmless, so that he can later learn to distinguish the bad guys from the good guys. Even with such a dog, safe protection training demands several hundred hours of dedicated work by the handler, much of it under the direct supervision of a profoundly expert trainer. Please don't buy any dog for protection training unless you are absolutely committed to the extreme amount of work that will be required of you personally. Also talk to your lawyer and your insurance agent first.

In contrast to the protection-trained dog, trained to bite on direct command or in reaction to direct physical assault on his master, the "deterrent dog" dissuades the vast majority of aspiring burglars, rapists, and assailants by his presence, his appearance, and his demeanor. Seeing such dog, the potential wrong-doer simply decides to look for a safer victim elsewhere. For this job, all that is needed is a dog that is large and that appears to be well-trained and unafraid. The Rottweiler can serve this role admirably, with the added assets of generally dark color and "bestial" appearance adding to the impression of formidability and fearsomeness. If the dog has been taught to bark a few times on command, eg "Fang, watch him!" rather than "Fifi, speak for a cookie", this skill can be useful to augment the deterrent effect.

Other breeds of dog which are equally suitable for protection or for deterrence include the Doberman, German Shepherd, Belgian Sheepdog, and Belgian Malinois. Of these the first 2 are also recognized by the general public as "police dogs". The Malamute, though not suitable for protection, is quite effective for deterrence due to his highly wolf-like appearance.

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU WANT A TOTALLY UNAGGRESSIVE AND UNPROTECTIVE DOG.

Most Rottweilers have an assertive and confident personality. When confronted with a threat, a proper Rottweiler will be somewhat more ready to fight than to flee. Thus he may respond aggressively in situations where many other breeds back down. Most Rottweilers have some inclination to act aggressively to repel intruders on their territory (i.e. your home) and to counter-act assaults upon their pack mates (you and your family). Without training and leadership from you to guide him, the dog cannot judge correctly whom to repel and whom to tolerate. Without training and leadership, sooner or later he may injure an innocent person who will successfully sue you for more than you own. With good training and leadership from you, he can be profoundly valuable as a defender of your home and family. (See also remarks on stability and socialization above.)

If you feel no need of an assertive dog or if you have the slightest doubts of your ability and willingness to supply the essential socialization, training and leadership, then please choose one of the many breeds noted for thoroughly unaggressive temperament, such as a Sheltie or a Golden Retriever.

READ THIS PARAGRAPH TWICE!!

DON'T BUY A ROTTWEILER IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO COMMIT YOURSELF FOR THE DOG'S ENTIRE LIFETIME.

No dog deserves to be cast out because his owners want to move to a no-pet apartment or because he is no longer a cute puppy or didn't grow up to be a beauty contest winner or because his owners through lack of leadership and training have allowed him to become an unruly juvenile delinquent, with a repertoire of undesirable behaviors. The prospects of a responsible and affectionate second home for a "used" dog are never very bright, but they are especially dim for a large, poorly mannered dog. A Rottweiler dumped into a Pound or Shelter has almost no chance of survival -- unless he has the great good fortune to be spotted by someone dedicated to Rottweiler Rescue. The prospects for adoption for a youngish, well-trained, and well-groomed Rottweiler whose owner seeks the assistance of the nearest Rottweiler Club or Rescue group are fairly good; but an older Rott has diminishing prospects. Be sure to contact your local Rottweiler club or Rescue group if you are diagnosed with a chronic illness or have other equally valid reason for seeking an adoptive home. Be sure to contact your local Rottweiler club if you are beginning to have difficulties in training your Rottweiler, so these can be resolved. Be sure to make arrangements in your will or with your family to ensure continued care or adoptive home for your Rottweiler if you should pre-decease him.

The life span of a Rottweiler is from 9 to 12 years. If that seems too long a time for you to give an unequivocal loyalty to your Rottweiler, then please do not get one! Indeed, as most dogs have a life expectancy that is as long or longer, please do not get any dog!

In Conclusion :

If you decide that the Rottweiler is the right match for you then your next step is finding a good breeder (code of ethics) One that wants to know everything about you, your home. A good breeder is one that wants to improve the breed, never to make money off the breed, breeds only the best dogs (never sick, bad tempered, or dog with genetic disorders), raises them in the home, show their dogs, trains their dogs for work and therapy, certifies their dogs eyes, heart, hips, the list goes on.... These breeder do it because they LOVE the breed!! They would never just sell you a dog unless they KNEW you were the right fit and the dog would be with you its ENTIRE LIFE! When I got Oz it was like I was adopting a child, it was a very intense process. Any breeder that tries to "sell" you the dog is out to make money and is a red flag! You buy from these people and you are only deteriorating the breed. Be responsible and make sure you are getting a Rottweiler for the right reasons and you ready for the committent. This is not any ol dog, it is like having a child in your home.

Remember dogs are a reflection of you, you are responsible for their actions.

However, as an alternative to buying a Rottweiler puppy, you may want to give some serious consideration to adopting a rescued Rottweiler. Despite the responsibility of their previous owner, rescued Rottweilers who have been evaluated by experienced Rottweiler handlers/breeders and vet checked have proven to be readily rehabilitated so as to become superb family companions for responsible and affectionate adopters. Many rescuers are skilled trainers who evaluate temperament and provide remedial training before offering dogs for placement, and who offer continued advisory support afterwards. Contact local Rottweiler breeders, Rottweiler club members, the local humane society, or your local all breed kennel club to learn who is doing Rescue work.

My name is Oz i'm 5. I just love being me! I am pretty predictable... you know walks on the beach, car rides, sleep, eat, but I am a really cool rottie... at least thats what everyone says.. My favorite toy - a motorcycle tire, i know pretty tough, right? I love to show everyone how I can throw it around like its a paper plate! I just love everything... birds, horses, dogs, even cats, whatever.... I'm easy... I'm Ozzzzz the rottweiler. Oh and don't forget that I looooove the ladies!

Oh your wondering about how big I am... well, I'm a big guy, 130lbs but i am in great shape! No fat on me ladies, I am a rock solid. Now of course I love to eat but not a treat guy..... Noooo thank you... I just don't like em. Yeah, I know i know... big male rott doesn't like treats??? It just doesn't add up.... Ya know... I actually spit those buggers right out, once in awhile there is a good treat I might like.. like driiiiiied meat! mmmmmmmmm...mmmm or these really special ones my owner finds me!!! But ya know since I was little guy I was started off on the colorful foods, you know rocccollii (my favorite), watermelon, apples, cabbage, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, thats what I like! Oh yeah, I eat lots of fish, venison, rabbit, bison, chicken, rice, yogurt, cottage cheese, olive oil.... and don't forget my daily vitamins and liquid Glucosamineeee Chondroitinnn... however you say it....

I also love to do tricks and learn new things, after all I am a guy and I need to show off new moves to stay cool around town. I am a big part of my family and I get to go everywhere - the mall, the coffee shop, the hardware store, the beach, the nail salon, boutiques, you name it - I go! If they say "NO" well its off to the next place. I make new friends everyday and everyone knows my name! People always remember me.... I LOVE the attention, sometimes I get so tired of the attention I just lay there and say to myself "I know tell me how great I am and handsome I am...." oh sorry... that was not very polite but hey i am a dog not a person after all... People always tell me how good I am and how they thought that dogs like me were not nice??? WHAAAAAT!!!??!! We all know that I am a reflection of my owner. She spends a lot of time with me and therefore I am a very good dog. I am not afraid or startled by the things that surround me, it's just my world.

My sweet little hula girl that butt of hers went a 100 miles an hour! The anticipation of someone greeting her with a pet was just too much for her to contain that wiggle of hers... and being a "verocious Rottweiler" some people would stop in their tracks thinking "Oh my... why is this rottweiler waiting for me!? Well, yes she was waiting for you because in her head she thought you were coming to see her... even though you were just passing by on the side walk and secondly the intense wiggling made her immobile. Now she wasn't always like this but she got so much love and attention from people her love and wiggle grew, and grew, and grew! The idea of a new person petting her was just over the top exciting!

Oh how I miss her, that black wet nose, her sweet kisses, that hula ulla wiggle, and that smile!

I lost Ulla to Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) when she was only 10. A horrible cancer that runs rampid in the breed. I found a small lump on Ulla's ribs and knew instantly it was not good. Learning that Ulla had cancer/Osteosarcoma made my world stop. For me my dogs are family, it was devastating. I educated myself on Osteosarcoma like I was studying to be an oncologist. I would be up to 5 in the morning night after night after night. I would not fall victim to a vet that did not understand the cancer. I interviewed a lot of vets and oncologists until I found the best! Ulla had 4 vets total; 1 western oncologist, 1 western/holistic oncologist, 1 western vet, and 1 holistic vet. My priority to make sure Ulla had an excellent quality of life!! I wanted her to feel healthy, be happy, and live out the rest of her life fulfilled.

Ulla lived to be 10 and during that year I was able to take time away from work so I could give Ulla every bit of my attention. Her favorite place - dog beach! We went there constantly and she would swim and play for hours, I mean H O U R S! This was a dog dying from Osteosarcoma??? She never knew she was sick. That was so key! I cooked a completely fresh carbohydrate free holistic diet. Ulla was also on Chinese medicine, A LOT of vitamins, and I also did chemotherapy. Ulla's doses were spilt in half and done over a period of days rather giving her treatments in one day. This was much easier on her. Ulla never got sick from the Chemo, in fact after the treatment she would stand the whole way home looking out the window for the entire 2 hour drive home. Her chemo was done by Dr. Alice Villalobos, she is amazing! (She is the founding member of the Veterinary Cancer Society and also the author of Amazon top 1,000 list books "Canine and Feline Geriatric Oncology: Honoring the Human Animal Bond" (Ulla and I are in her book). She is located in California and if you would like more information on her just ask me and I can get you in contact with her.

When Ulla did pass away it happened like a switch. Its strange... but they tell you... I asked Ulla that evening if she wanted to go to the beach one more time? Her eyes lite up and her lip got stuck on her tooth... it was like life reentered her body for a brief moment.... and it was a YES!! That night Ulla and I slept on the floor and in the morning when we arrived at dog beach she just SMILED and soaked in the sun. I knew it was her last day and so did she.... We sat there for hours. That evening Ulla died in my arms of a grand mall seizure.... Ulla passed over four years ago, but it seems like yesterday.... This is how powerful love and memories are!

With this blog I am here to share my life with Oz the Rottweiler.

I have spent nearly my whole life with Rottweilers and will always have the breed. Since I could walk I have poured my heart and soul into animals... Dogs have been my biggest weakness although all animals are my weakness...

This is a wonderful breed but it is not for everyone. They are an intelligent working breed that needs A LOT of ATTENTION, TRAINING, TIME, LOVE, EXERCISE, DEDICATION, and a very good understanding of the breed (let alone food and cost).

I am here to share stories, help you with any questions you may have, and expand our knowledge in health and nutrition. I am not an expert nor am I a nutritionist. I have put a lot time and dedication into dogs and learning about what is best for our animals. I lost my last Rottweiler to Ostersarcoma (bone cancer) and that started my thirst for knowledge on nutrition and health like CRAZY! I also studied dog behavior informally for my own personal education.
